The U.S.-backed Iraqi Army has taken control of the last major road out of Western Mosul, trapping ISIS in the city. The road connected Mosul to Tal Afar, an ISIS controlled city 40 miles to the west in Syria.
This advance comes after over 100 days of fighting in the ongoing offensive to take Mosul from ISIS. The United Nations estimates that more than 176,000 people have fled Mosul since the offensive started in October.

The fighting is moving closer to the heart of the city, with the Iraqi military capturing the city’s airport last week.
The U.S.-led anti-ISIS Coalition is increasingly confident in the face of these gains on the ground.
“Their destruction just becomes really a matter of time,” said British Major General Rupert Jones, deputy commander for the Combined Joint Task Force, on Tuesday.
