The Syrian Army has retaken Palmyra from ISIS, advancing into the city after ISIS forces withdrew on Thursday. ISIS’s military situation continues to degrade as it defends multiple fronts.
As reported by Lima Charlie News in December 2016, ISIS had retaken the ancient city, claiming a Russian special operations base containing a treasure trove of weaponry, armor, ammunition, and what is believed to be a high altitude Russian surface-to-air missile system.
Home to the world-renowned archeological site, Palmyra was first captured by ISIS in early 2014, destroying ancient ruins and conducting ritualistic shows of strength. By early 2016, Syrian government forces, Iranian-backed militias, and Russian special operations troops had retaken the city in fierce battles. In May, 2016, a Russian symphony orchestra was flown in for a live concert amidst the ruins. Palmyra would be lost once again in December 2016.
Syrian army offensives, along with Russian support, the U.S. led offensive in Iraq, and Turkish forces moving into the area around Aleppo, have led to gains allowing for Palmyra to be retaken once again.
